Motu Patlu are far more than two beloved cartoon characters. Over the decades, they have become an enduring part of Indian popular culture and an inseparable part of countless childhoods. Behind their remarkable evolution stands the sustained creative contribution, perseverance, and foresight of Dr. Harvinder Mankkar, whose association with these characters spans nearly five decades.

When Dr. Harvinder Mankkar took up the creative responsibility of Motu Patlu, the characters primarily appeared in the pages of the Lotpot comic. At that stage, they were essentially comic-book personalities. Dr. Harvinder Mankkar, however, recognised possibilities far beyond the printed page.

His vision was not merely to preserve the characters but to expand their creative universe and introduce them to new generations through emerging forms of visual entertainment. With remarkable foresight, he explored the possibilities of bringing Motu Patlu to life through muppet-puppet films and subsequently contributed to their development in 2D animation, working alongside Mr. A. P. Bajaj.

At a time when animation and character-based entertainment were undergoing significant transformation, these efforts reflected an unusually progressive understanding of where children’s entertainment was heading. Dr. Mankkar believed that Motu Patlu deserved to transcend the boundaries of a printed comic and reach audiences through television and other visual mediums.

His persistent efforts towards bringing Motu Patlu to television represented another important chapter in their evolution. The journey required imagination, patience, experimentation and, above all, an unwavering belief in the enduring appeal of the characters.

Over the years, Motu Patlu evolved from comic-book figures into widely recognised animated personalities. Their popularity extended well beyond India, and their cultural visibility reached an international audience. Their presence at Madame Tussauds, where figures of Motu and Patlu were installed, became a notable milestone in their journey. Their appearance in international publications further demonstrated the growing global recognition of these distinctly Indian characters.

What makes Dr. Harvinder Mankkar’s contribution particularly significant is the longevity of his creative association with Motu Patlu. For nearly 47 years, he has continued to nurture, develop and advance these characters, adapting his creative approach to changing technologies, changing audiences and changing forms of entertainment.

His contribution therefore cannot be viewed merely through the lens of illustration or character development. It represents a sustained creative vision—one that recognised the potential of two comic characters long before their eventual expansion into a much larger entertainment phenomenon.

The journey of Motu Patlu is, in many ways, a story of continuity and transformation: from the pages of Lotpot to animation, from print to television, and from an Indian comic tradition to international visibility.

And throughout this extraordinary journey, Dr. Harvinder Mankkar has remained an important creative force behind their evolution.

For Motu Patlu, his nearly five-decade association has been more than a professional contribution. It has been a journey of vision, perseverance, imagination and unwavering commitment.

The story of Motu Patlu cannot be told merely as the story of two fictional characters. It is also the story of the creative minds who believed in their potential, nurtured them across generations, and continued to carry them forward into new worlds. Among those enduring contributors, Dr. Harvinder Mankkar holds a distinctive and significant place.
